Homemade Oat Moisturizer for Eczema Relief
Eczema can be a challenging skin condition that requires loving care and attention. I understand how distressing it can be, especially when trying to find products that truly help. Research indicates that creams with 1% colloidal oatmeal can offer relief for those struggling with eczema. While it’s easy to find ready-made options on store shelves, I’d like to share why creating your own cream at home can be a more beneficial choice.
Many commercial products do contain helpful ingredients, but they often also include synthetic preservatives like phenoxyethanol, which can aggravate sensitive skin—especially for those dealing with eczema. I certainly recognize the role of preservatives in product effectiveness, particularly natural ones, and I incorporate them in my homemade cosmetics. Nonetheless, my experience with my youngest son, Adam, who developed eczema at just 5 months old, taught me the importance of being cautious. Initially, his skin responded beautifully to my homemade oat cream, feeling smooth and moisturized. Yet, when I added a preservative and a pH adjuster—which I thought would help—his skin reacted with redness and irritation almost instantly.
Drawing from this personal journey, I want to share a simple recipe for a moisturizing cream made from oat milk. This gentle cream can be a blessing for those dealing with eczema, atopic dermatitis, or any other skin sensitivities. It’s also ideal for women recovering from chemical peels, when the skin needs extra compassion and care.
For this recipe, I recommend getting a small scale, as a standard kitchen scale does not offer the accuracy you need. I found a reliable one on Amazon for a reasonable price.
Please remember that this cream is fresh and best used within 10 days, so keep it stored in the refrigerator. Don’t forget to label the jar so you can easily track its freshness; expired products can unfortunately have adverse effects on the skin.
The core ingredient for this cream is homemade oat milk, which I outlined in my earlier article on natural remedies for eczema. If you’re interested in making that as well, I invite you to check it out. It’s all about nurturing our skin and finding what works best for each individual journey.
Recipe for Oat Moisturizer (100 g):
Ingredients:
- 70 g oat milk (homemade or store-bought, preferably without additives)
- 20 g olive oil (preferably cold-pressed, extra virgin)
- 5 g vegetable glycerin (hydrates and protects against moisture loss)
- 5 g natural emulsifier (e.g., Olivem 1000 or Glyceryl Stearate Citrate)

Instructions:
- Preparation of the Oil Phase:
- Weigh the olive oil and add the chosen emulsifier to it.

2. Preparation of the Water Phase:
- Add the glycerin to the oat milk and gently mix.

3. Heating:
- Place both containers (with the oil phase and water phase) in a water bath, meaning in a pot with hot water.

- Heat until the ingredients reach a temperature of about 70°C and the emulsifier is fully dissolved.

4.Combining the Phases:
- Slowly pour the water phase (oat milk with glycerin) into the oil phase (olive oil with emulsifier).

- Blend the mixture with a hand blender on low speed.

- Stir for a few minutes until you achieve a smooth emulsion.

5. Cooling:
Set the cream aside to cool, stirring gently to maintain a smooth consistency.
6. Storage:
Transfer the finished cream into a clean, sterilized container.

7.Labeling:
If you’re wondering where I get the labels for my homemade cosmetics – I recently invested in a small label printer, and it has truly made my life easier. You can set the date on it, which is especially important for cosmetics with a short shelf life. For the link, click here.
